Mindful Art

What is mindful art?
Whether you are a complete beginner when it comes to mindfulness, or whether you regularly practice mindfulness meditation, sometimes it can be difficult to ‘quiet’ the mind and really focus on the here and now.
One really useful avenue to help us become more mindful is Art. This does not mean that you have to be a world renowned artist or painter and create wonderful masterpieces.
In fact, almost the opposite – mindful art is not about what you create, but more so about how you get there and what you notice along the way.
What are the benefits of mindful art?
Simply taking time to ‘create’ something can really help focus the mind and help you concentrate on the task at hand rather than think about what is happening tomorrow or worrying what your boss meant during that meeting yesterday.
When we become so focussed on what we are creating, time can quickly pass by without us even realising that we ‘haven’t been thinking’ about other things for the last couple of hours.
This is because creative activities (whether that is drawing, colouring, painting or ‘cutting and sticking) can channel our focus, concentration and attention.
How can I get involved with mindful art?
So if you find yourself wanting to try mindfulness and becoming more aware but find it hard to ‘sit still’ or meditate, why not try doing something creative?
Doodling on a notepad, colouring in a picture, painting a landscape, the possibilities are endless and you don’t need to have expensive materials or a degree in Fine Art to try it!
You never know, you may create something you love and find inner peace and calmness along the way.
